- Duration: 5 to 7 hours for a boat day, 1 to 2 hours for a shore session at Sosua
- Included on the boat days: mask, snorkel, vest, guide and normally food. Fins are sometimes extra
- Best for: anyone comfortable floating face down. No certification and no experience needed
- Book ahead: 3 to 5 days in high season, and pick a morning departure for calmer water
- Practical warning: visibility drops for a day or two after heavy rain because the rivers push sediment out
How we ranked this list
We ranked by water clarity at the stop, then by how much time you actually spend in the water rather than on the boat, then by review volume and rating, then by what the price includes.
- Clarity first, because a snorkel trip to cloudy water is a boat ride with extra steps
- Time in the water second, since some full day trips give you 40 minutes of actual snorkelling
- Review volume and rating third, read together rather than separately
- Inclusions last, because gear rental and food quietly change the real price
What we left out. We left out scuba trips, which need a certification and belong in a different guide. We also left out any boat with fewer than 20 reviews and any listing that does not say how many snorkel stops it makes.
The picks, ranked
1. Catamaran Snorkeling All-Inclusive Day-Trip
The catamaran day that most people end up on. All inclusive on board, two snorkel stops and enough time in the water to justify the mask.
Check Availability →2. VIP Party Boat & Snorkeling
Smaller boat, louder music, better ratings. Pick this one if the group energy matters as much as the reef.
Check Availability →3. Cayo Arena, Paradise Island Tour
Cayo Arena has the clearest water on this coast, and the trip is as much about the sandbank as the fish.
Check Availability →Starting prices per person, indicative and subject to change.

Sosua Bay
The most accessible snorkeling on the North Coast. A protected bay with calm, clear water and a healthy coral reef just offshore. You can rent equipment on the beach or bring your own. Best visibility in the morning before the boats arrive.
Cayo Arena (Paradise Island)
A tiny sandbar surrounded by pristine coral reef, accessible only by boat from Punta Rucia (about 1 hour from Puerto Plata). The water is crystal clear and the reef is teeming with tropical fish and starfish. This is the snorkeling highlight of the North Coast.
What to bring
- Reef-safe sunscreen (regular sunscreen damages coral)
- Underwater camera or waterproof phone case
- Water shoes for rocky entries
- Your own mask and snorkel if you have them (rental quality varies)
Book a snorkeling tour
Guided tours include boat transport, equipment, and often lunch.
Before you book
- Reef safe sunscreen or a rash guard, and put it on before you board. The oil slick behind a full boat is not a small problem.
- Do not stand on the reef, not even for a second. It is dead where people have been standing for years and it shows.
- Boats cancel for wind, and on this coast wind is most likely between December and March in the afternoon.
