TL;DR
  • Duration: 4 hours for a single activity, 7 to 9 hours for a combo day with pickup
  • Included: gear, guide and hotel or port pickup on most. Lunch varies, so read the inclusions line
  • Best for: reasonably fit travellers. Most operators set a minimum age around 8 and a driver age around 18
  • Book ahead: 3 to 5 days, and earlier on cruise days when the ports empty into the same tours
  • Practical warning: you will finish covered in red dust. Wear clothes you do not mind ruining

How we ranked this list

We ranked by how much of the day the starting price actually covers, then by review volume in the catalogue we can price check, then by rating, then by whether pickup is included.

  • Inclusions first, because a $75 activity plus a taxi each way is not cheaper than a $95 day with pickup
  • Review volume second, since adventure operators vary far more than their listings suggest
  • Rating third, and we treat anything under 4.5 on a physical activity as a real warning
  • Pickup last, because without a rental car it decides whether the day is possible at all

What we left out. We left out anything that quotes per group without saying the group size, and anything with fewer than 20 reviews. We also left out operators whose listed meeting point we could not match to a real port or hotel zone.

North Coast adventures

The North Coast around Puerto Plata and Cabrera is the adventure capital of the DR. Within a 2-hour drive you can cliff jump at Laguna Dudu, climb the 27 waterfalls of Laguna Dudu, explore caves, and surf at Playa Grande. Many tours combine multiple activities in a single day.

Central highlands

Jarabacoa in the central mountains is the base for canyoning, white water rafting on the Rio Yaque del Norte, and hiking to Pico Duarte (the highest peak in the Caribbean at 3,098m). The cooler mountain air and pine forests feel completely different from the coast.

Booking tips

  • Book at least 2-3 days in advance during high season (Dec-Apr)
  • Morning departures are best for avoiding afternoon heat and rain
  • Most tours include hotel pickup from Puerto Plata or Cabarete
  • Bring water shoes, sunscreen, and a waterproof phone case

Book an adventure tour

All tours include transport, equipment, and guides. Free cancellation up to 24 hours.

Before you book

  • Ask what the vehicle insurance actually covers before you sign. On buggies the deposit for damage is often taken in cash.
  • Cruise passengers get sold the same tours at a markup on board. Booking direct is usually cheaper for the same operator.
  • If it rained overnight the countryside tracks turn to clay, and operators will still run. Expect to get properly dirty.
